Using A Taper Pin Reamer In Machine Shop Production
A taper pin reamer is used in situation where metal, wood, or other materials will be joined later with a taper pin. The taper pin is small at one end and gradually gets wider in diameter. The pin is then hammered or pushed in place and because the hole it is set in is slightly smaller it creates a tight ridged joint. The most common ways the taper pin reamer is used is in a fixed mill or lathe to make sure the hole angle is precise.
In an application where precision is not required the taper pin reamer could be used with a large high speed drill, and in the case of drilling wood, hand reamers are often used. In designs that will join wood with dowel pins an adjustable reamer is commonly used. The adjustable reamer uses a disposable blade and once set to the cutting size by tightening the nuts corresponding to the required size the tools makes the pin hole. The adjustable reamer is known for chattering while cutting and is not recommended where precise tap holes are called for.
In the case of large diameter taper pins being cut, it is necessary for drills to be used to cut the hole to a predetermined size before using the taper pin reamer. There are many types of drill bits for metal and it's important to use the drill bit that is best suited to the metal being drilled. This technique is used where precision is required for optimum taper pin anchoring. In applications where the taper pin needs to be fully secured in place and inserted, a bonding agent that acts like a lubricant is applied to the taper pin before being inserted into the materials.
In high volume production a machine is used cut the hole with a taper pin reamer bit to speed up the cutting process while ensuring a precise cut on each piece that is being drilled. The edges of this kind of pin reamer are spiral fluted for precise cutting and to give the reamer a maximum cutting life. When metal is the material that is being drilled, lubricant is used to reduce heat, and help make the cut smoother without damaging the reamer. There are many different metal cutting tools but most of the time a drill is preferred.
In a repair or production situation where after a hole has been drilled and its edges need to be clean of burrs and other potential obstructions a hand reamer will be used to touch up the edges or outer potions of a drilled hole for easier insertion of a bolt or pin later in the production process. There are many ways a taper pin reamer can used in the design, building or repairing of metal and wood and each version of the reamer is unique and specific to the material that requires a taper.
